It is important that you see a Midwife as early as possible in your pregnancy. Women have their first and longest Antenatal appointment between 6 – 12 weeks of pregnancy with their Midwife. This is called a “booking” visit and involves questions about your health, any illnesses or previous pregnancies. An Early Pregnancy Scan sometimes also called a Viability Scan or Dating Scan provides reassurance in this very early stage of your pregnancy. A pregnancy can be seen on scan from as early as 6 weeks from the first day of your last period LMP. We should be able to see a heartbeat from 6 weeks. When will I have my dating scan? For most Australian mums-to-be, the first scan will be a nuchal.
The main purpose of a dating scan is to check the stage of pregnancy and therefore when the baby is due. Measuring the baby can be more accurate than dating by the last menstrual period. It is also an opportunity to check the baby is alive and developing as expected, and check for twins. This scan may also be part of your screening test for Down’s syndrome nuchal translucency scan. Occasionally, if the baby is in an awkward position, an internal scan may be carried out, using a vaginal probe.
