I was thrilled when I first got my hands on a copy of the beautifully designed book, 40 Days of Dating. This was another great design to add to my book collection. Timothy Goodman is also an art director and illustrator who runs his own studio in New York. The two of them have very different personalities and different dating styles, and despite having an immediate attraction to each other they never pursued a romantic relationship outside of their friendship. The book began with an idea that was frowned upon by many friends of the pair. The two decided to start an experiment, based on the idea that it takes 40 days to change a habit, and started to date each other for 40 days. Following rules that they set for each other, they embarked on this dating experience hoping it may be possible for them to change their own bad dating habits, or even find love. In March of the pair of friends dated, drank, laughed and fought together all over NYC.

Their side-by-side writings were like a magnifying glass into the psyches of any man or woman trying to navigate a new romance in New York City — their brutal honesty about themselves and each other is likely what led the blog to wild popularity. Would the two stay together after the experiment? Would they break up? The people wanted to know.
The couple decided to spend the last few days of the experiment on their agreed-upon one weekend getaway. Their location of choice? Disney World. Jessica, though she seemed willing to try to work it out, came to terms with the fact that they might not be compatible — and she needs more than Tim could offer her. And no, they did not have breakup sex.

However, this time I was able to pinpoint some of the reasons why 40 Dates of Dating is lost on me. First off, I’m afraid I really don’t like the daters.
Television writers and designers think there’s still more gold to be mined from dating in New York. Goodman usually plays the field and Walsh is a hopeless romantic. The couple breaks down the rules three days a week, couples counseling, a weekend trip, a daily questionnaire, etc. But one wonders if risking their friendship is worth it or where they end up after the intense and intensively documentive experience.
In an attempt to explore and hopefully overcome their fears and inadequacies, Tim and Jessica will go through the motions of a relationship for the next 40 days: the commitment, time, companionship, joys, and frustrations. Can they help each other, or will they fall into their same habits? Will they damage their friendship? What if they fall in love? The videos features the two in chairs, being crawled on by rats, having their chairs sawed from under them, covered in white stuff and pink feathers, and Walsh tossed like a doll by a sumo wrestler, while the behind-the-scenes clip has lots of giggling.

The Trouble With a Public 40-Day Dating Experiment

Jessica and Timothy have been friends for years but never romantically involved, and decided to try dating each other for 40 days, with each of them writing up their experiences daily on the site.
If all of this sounds like the plot of Hollywood’s latest romantic comedy, you’re not far wrong. Reports suggest film rights to the project are likely to be sold. There’ll be more than a few young starlets jostling for position in order to win the lead parts: my money is on Zooey Deschanel and Robert Pattinson. The final entries – from day 40 – have now been posted on the blog. The experiment is over.
And what have we learned? Well, first of all, the screenwriters will have to liven up the plot a little for the movie version. Because although 40 Days of Dating was an intriguing read, it was never particularly exciting. Partly, this was due to the unfortunate health problems Jessica suffered during the 40 days, but it was also a product of Jessica and Timothy being successful, well-adjusted people who approach every situation analytically.

Eighteen months later, and the pair are back, with a book about their experiment, and the aftermath. Now, I have to admit, two summers ago, I tried to get into 40 Days. I remember reading the first couple of days of the experiment, but struggling to get into it. I attributed it to dating overkill.

Whatever opinion there may be about online dating, most can agree that traditional forms of courtship seem miles away. As the name suggests, it chronicled their experiences of each day they were dating. The entire idea sprung from their opposite relationship problems. Both seeking to find love — or at least sort out their issues — they decided to exclusively date for 40 days. Thus, it was no surprise that the website had stunning art direction. The designers have added a lot of extra content that reveal more about their past and what happened after the experiment. Their story was funny and always brutally honest. It attracted a lot of readership, and less than two years after its initial launch, the designers are now authors. Abrams Publishing released a printed version of the book on January 20, Warner Brothers have also optioned the rights for a film version.
The book itself is everything and more a reader can ask for. The art direction, hand lettering and illustrations are by Goodman and Walsh.
